The Story Behind Buick’s New Logo Design

The Story Behind Buick’s New Logo and EV Future
The decision behind Buick’s new logo and symbol was recently revealed — and it’s one of those rare design stories born from a happy accident. According to the automaker, the idea came from one of Buick’s own designers, Geoffrey Richmond. While experimenting with a rough sketch of a new shield design, Richmond caught the attention of GM President Mark Reuss, who immediately loved it. From that point, the rest was history.
Buick’s motivation for the switch to a new shield logo goes beyond aesthetics. The change marks a big step forward in Buick branding, symbolizing its transition to an all-electric future. The automaker has announced that it plans to offer only Buick vehicles powered by electricity by 2030. With a new logo and a fresh design direction, Buick is ready to redefine what modern American luxury looks like.
Buick’s New Logo: A Happy Accident That Redefined the Brand
The backstory of Buick’s new logo gives insight into the creativity driving its next chapter. During a design review, Mark Reuss noticed Richmond’s early sketches for a more streamlined Buick symbol and immediately decided to move forward with it. Even though the design wasn’t finalized, Reuss saw in it the perfect representation of Buick’s forward motion.
According to Reuss,
“The redesigned columns of the tri-shield incorporate fluid movements that convey motion. It’s sleek and dynamic, and I love that we’ll see it on all Buicks going forward into the new era of electrification for the brand and for the company.”
The new Buick shield logo moves away from the circular emblem used for decades and instead presents three distinct shields aligned horizontally. This cleaner, modern shield design conveys motion and innovation — two key themes in Buick’s current rebranding efforts. The refreshed look not only modernizes Buick vehicles visually but also reinforces the company’s commitment to progress and sustainability.
Buick Branding and the Electric Future
The logo update is more than just a visual refresh — it’s the foundation of a bold new identity for Buick branding. The company is aligning its design language, technology, and marketing around a single purpose: a luxurious electric future.
Buick has announced plans to transition to an EV-only lineup by 2030, marking one of the most ambitious moves in its history. One of the first Buick vehicles in this transition will be the Buick Electra E4, a compact crossover built on GM’s Ultium EV platform. Equipped with advanced lithium-ion battery technology, the Electra E4 is expected to deliver both performance and efficiency.
The Electra name will expand into a full family of nine EVs, each representing the next generation of Buick vehicles with innovative technology, premium craftsmanship, and the signature shield logo proudly displayed up front. While details on specific models remain limited, Buick’s focus is clear: blending elegance, electric performance, and forward-thinking design.
