“It is typical in the automotive industry to roll out concepts and features by putting them in premium vehicles first. A bellwether for mass-market brands looking to adopt and implement these technology features into their portfolio is in two of the industry’s preeminent studies, the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) and the Vehicle Dependability Study. Connecting insights from the two studies better informs automakers by substantiating trends and showcasing how some automakers are preventing problems from occurring early on and throughout the ownership experience.”
-Senior Director of Auto Benchmarking at J.D. Power Frank Hanley
J.D. Power publishes the Vehicle Dependability Study annually. The assessment examines vehicles based on 184 unique problems over nine significant categories. For instance, J.D. Power analyzed driving assistance, driving experience, exterior, features/displays, infotainment, interior, powertrain, HVAC controls, and convenience.
The Study gathers data from owners, specifically from consumers owning 2020 model-year vehicles. The Dependability data provides automotive brands and models with a Problem Per 100 Vehicle score (PP100), representing the average dilemmas owners experience per 100 vehicles.
Two noteworthy GMC vehicles earned segment-level awards in their respective studies, the Yukon and Sierra.
