Pre-Tow Inspection: Your At-Home Checklist

Before every tow, a quick walk-around and inspection can make all the difference.

1. The Hitch: Your Secure Connection

The hitch is the primary link between your GMC Sierra 1500 and your trailer. 

• Visual Inspection: Look for any signs of rust, corrosion, cracks, or bends on the hitch receiver, hitch ball, and coupler. 
• Mounting Bolts: Ensure all mounting bolts that secure the hitch to your truck’s frame are present and tightly fastened. Any loose or missing bolts require immediate attention.
• Hitch Pin and Clip: Verify the hitch pin is fully inserted through the receiver and the ball mount, and that the safety clip is securely in place, preventing the pin from sliding out.
• Coupler Condition: Ensure the coupler seats firmly over the hitch ball with no play when connecting your trailer. The coupler latch should be fully engaged and secured with its pin or lock.

2. Lights: Illuminating Your Intentions

Properly functioning trailer lights are a legal requirement and essential for communicating with other drivers.

• Connectivity: Ensure the trailer’s electrical plug is clean, free of corrosion, and securely seated into your truck’s receptacle. A loose connection can lead to intermittent light failures.
